!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! . I've been looking at this car for a few weeks now, and the want hasn't been higher. It seems like a good deal. Does anyone have any advice when purchasing an old 911.

while we're asking for favours,
Can someone get a job in Japan for 12 months, buy an Evo Wagon, then move to australia with the car and sell it to me once you've imported it?

Can be loosely interpreted as Greko-Roman word for 'hoon'

That's a risk I'm willing to take. Honestly, when I see cars I like online I just hope they go to a deserving owner that will drive and handle them properly.

I'm paying in a few years. (Car is subject to appraisal before final sale)

Aww man, I'm out.
Then again, that car almost is in the unhoonable zone wherein I behave like Cameron's dad in Ferris Bueller's Day Off.

Where do you live?
My old man picked up a classic 911 for insanely cheap recently from a Porsche mechanic shop that's going out of business. A bunch of customers ran out of money over the year and had to abandon their cars because they couldn't pay the repair bills.
They might still have some left for sale. Crazy good deals. They don't seem to be marketing the cars on eBay or anything.

Not the best deal in the world. It's not terrible, but others in the same or better condition pop up for less. Search enthusiast forums and check SCCA listings. I saw a gold/tan 80s targa for about 18k that was in really good shape. Got to see it in action at an AutoX too.

Maryland. I'm in college, but I do own a 71 2002 in pristine condition that I would trade for a 911.

No targa

Sure, but no shot I'll give it back!

It's not mine, I just want this when I get settled out of college.

Yeah I know.
I know exactly how you feel. The price of a good 996 is just so tempting! I would love to buy and DD/hoon one but.... It's just not the right time.

but this is exactly what loans are for! do it!

oh that's too far to come check the inventory out
wow a 71 2002 in pristine condition?
my advice: do NOT trade that in for any car, even a 911
i have a feeling you will later regret it
the 2002s are going up in value every month
and you will miss the car later. it would be better to save up and add another car later.

I really have no plan of ever getting rid of her. I'm 19 and I told myself that I want to teach my kids how to drive with my 2002. The 911 is literally the only car I wouldn't mind trading my car for. But, I know what I have and don't want to get rid of it. Funny story. After about a week of owning it, I had a guy in a Ford Edge chase me down in traffic, pull beside me, and scream out How much'? I said no way, I just bought it. I already have a few people that want to buy it. At car shows people have said never sell this car, unless you sell it to me.

that is awesome! everyone wants a clean 2002.
have you driven the pre-964 911s?
they are awesome cars. but not sure if you'd be happy trading your car in for it. sure a late 80s 911 will be faster. but it won't be much more advanced from a technology perspective. the 911 was long in the tooth by then. the 944 was a more modern car than the 911 was.
if you want an air cooled 911 it would be pretty awesome to save up for a 993 to have alongside your car. that way you have a classic 2002 and a sweet 911 that's not too modern and not too old either. if you didn't already have the 2002 then a classic 911 would be great. but if you keep the 2002 and one day get a 993 you'd have a car with ABS and decent air conditioning to use on days when driving older tech is tough

Good point. I have never driven any 911. I really like the styling of the 930s, but your point is a very strong one. Living in an area with such drastic weather changes, I should look for a more modern car. Would you recommend a 964 or go strait for the 993?

PPI at a reputable Porsche mechanic is the only answer here.

I have got to drive my Dad's 1982 911SC a lot. Awesome car. Very engaging. Needs ALL your attention at all times. Awesome weekend car. Not the most awesome DD when there is bad weather and/or heavy traffic. No power assist on anything but the windows. Which again is awesome for weekends, but it could get a little rough for a DD if you're not lucky enough to have a short commute.
I have not got to drive a 964 or 993. My car is a 997 so I've only driven the '82 and the '10. Polar opposites...
Based on what I've read both the 964 and 993 would be a lot more livable than a pre-964 car. Some years/models of the 964 had some issues but I haven't read of any catastrophic issues like the 996 IMS issue, so there are probably solutions to any 964 issues.
964s are kind of a bargain right now. Everyone wants the classic car or the 993. So if you got a great deal on a 964 I think it would be a good buy as it probably wouldn't lose much value at all even after you put miles on it.
If you want AWD for weather then you'd need to drive a 964 and 993 to see how they compare.
If I was shopping for an air cooled 911 I would be open to both a 964 and a 993. I would do a lot of research and drive both cars, hopefully on the same day. I do like how the 964 has the classic look yet is more modern. Did you see the Singer restomod is based off a 964? And I also like the looks of the 993.
If I was buying a classic 911 I think I would want a really old one, like a late 60s or early 70s car. They are expensive though. But it would be cool to have a true classic one.
One neat thing - I think the 964 and 993 C4's sell for less than the C2 because most people want RWD for their weekend car. But if AWD actually benefits you then you could get a C4 and save some money.

I've been watching this car on eBay. Its not a bad price. Targas dont bring as much as coupes for all those saying theres better priced ones. If you want a decent air cooled 911 coupe this is about as good as it gets. All the other models are above $30k now for a decent one. I wish I could find a decent 964 instead for the same price.

Advise? Don't take a '86 but a '87. Because G50.

One more advice: Don't trade your 2002 for a 911. Ever. Unless there is absolutely no other way than owning 1 car. I've got both and chosing which one to take for a ride often is won by the '02. Seriously.

One more reason the C4's are cheaper is that in the end it will be more expensive due to maintenance and stuff (insurance/taxes/fuel as it is heavier). At least, that's what I've always heard.

At this point I would take up male prostitution before I sell that car. The idea of a 911 is very tempting, but it's a very different animal. The first week I had my 02 I couldn't put it away. One night I ended up taking her out three times, within about 2 hours, because I couldn't get enough. It's bliss and the car is surprisingly very practical, when the weather's right.

I have an '87, and I have learned that old 911s are kind of attention whores. Mileage isn't near as important as how well they've been treated. You really have to maintain the shit out of them and drive them regularly. If you do that, they'll run forever. I have a buddy with an '89 with 400,000+ on the clock.
Have a good Porsche guy take a look before you buy, and if anything looks like it's been shoddily fixed, not properly maintained, or left sitting for years, take a pass. The good ones are really good, and the bad ones are really bad.

I do always worry about the added mechanical complexity of AWD in the long run. It would add to maintenance costs. The added weight would create more fuel usage. I always get RWD myself as I am in So Cal and never have bad weather. But I'm guessing if you live somewhere with long winters and tons of snow it could be worth it.
The interesting thing is that you can remove the AWD components of some cars to make the car lighter and less complex. I was reading on an Audi R8 forum that some owners convert their cars to RWD.

For some reason I am not a fan of red sports cars. At this point it is almost cliche, unless it's a Ferrari. The slate/silver/grey on this one looks nice and isn't overwhelming. And yes, get rid of the sunroof to add lightness.
